The 24-Hour Flight Refund Window

Have you ever booked a flight and had instant buyer’s remorse? Perhaps you booked the wrong time or the wrong date? Or realized, quickly, that you can’t take the trip?

As long as it’s within 24 hours, you’re ok!

Even if you’ve booked a non-refundable ticket, and you’re within 7 days of your booked flight, you can change or cancel your reservation. In fact, it’s a government mandate. On most airlines, you pay for the fare, but if you cancel (call or online) within your 24 hours, you receive a full refund. With American Airlines, you have the option of putting your flight on a 24 hour hold at first, which replaces the option for a refund.

Even better news? This applies to any airline selling travel within the United States. This works great if you’ve booked directly through the airline or your travel agent. Booking through a third party, like Expedia, makes the cancellation a little more difficult.
