Airport Pet Restrooms

While most domestic airports have pet relief areas outside, as of August 2016, it is a federal requirement to have them after security at all airports carrying more than 10,000 passengers per day. These amenities were put in place for service dogs, but so many people now travel with their pets that everyone is welcome to use them.

Keep in mind that some airports are simply so tiny that it’s not a big deal to go outside, pre-security, with your pet. You’ll also be surprised by which airports comply with the federal regulation. Some, like SFO, have one post-security relief area to deal with the entire airport. Others have none at all! Then there are smaller airports, like Syracuse and Sarasota, that do offer this amenity. Finally, there are places like JFK, where they seem to understand that your dog is part of your family.

Join our Pawty Patrol! When you’re traveling by air, if you see a pet restroom that isn’t listed here, or is incorrect, tweet, IG or email us with the hashtag #PawtyPatrol – you can even send a photo. We’ll tag you in either Twitter or IG and thank you on the site when we add the update.

Tips & tricks:

  • Always clean up after your pet. Most pet restrooms have “poop bags” and a specific trash can.
  • Most pet restrooms have some sort of hose, so be polite and hose it down. Many people don’t do this, and that’s why the restrooms often smell as bad as they do. If they go, use the hose.
  • Fly on a connecting flight, if you can. This gives your pet a chance to relieve themselves mid-way through.
  • I recommend putting a pee pad in your dog carrier, just in case. On the off chance your pup doesn’t quite make it to the restroom, you can use the pad to mop up the accident on the concourse. Please clean up — imagine someone dragging their suitcase through urine or worse, slipping in it.
